How to Wash Egyptian Cotton Towels (So They Stay Soft for Years)
The right way to wash Egyptian cotton towels — temperature, detergent, drying, and the mistakes that ruin them. Keep your towels plush and absorbent for a decade.

Before First Use
Wash your new Egyptian cotton towels before using them for the first time. This removes any residual manufacturing finishes and opens up the cotton fibres for maximum absorbency. You'll notice they feel even softer after the first wash.
Washing Temperature
Use warm water — 40°C (104°F).
Warm water is the sweet spot: hot enough to remove oils and bacteria, cool enough to protect the cotton fibres from shrinking or weakening. Avoid hot water (60°C+) for regular washes — save that for occasional deep cleaning only.
Detergent: Less Is More
- Use a mild, liquid detergent — powder detergents can leave residue in the weave
- Use half the recommended amount — too much detergent builds up in the fibres and makes towels feel stiff
- Never use fabric softener — this is the number one mistake people make
Why No Fabric Softener?
Fabric softener coats cotton fibres with a thin layer of silicone or wax. This makes them feel "silky" temporarily but dramatically reduces absorbency. Over time, the coating builds up and makes towels water-repellent — the opposite of what you want.
Egyptian cotton towels get naturally softer with each wash. They don't need fabric softener. If your towels feel stiff, the cause is almost always detergent buildup, not a need for softener.
Drying
Tumble Dry on Low
- Use low heat — high heat damages cotton fibres and causes shrinkage
- Remove towels promptly when the cycle ends to prevent musty smells
- Towels should feel completely dry — damp towels develop bacteria quickly
Air Dry (Alternative)
- Hang towels spread out, not folded — airflow prevents mildew
- Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods (can fade colours)
- Give them a good shake before hanging to fluff the fibres
What to Avoid
- Bleach: Weakens cotton fibres and can cause yellowing on white towels over time. Use white vinegar instead.
- Fabric softener: Coats fibres, reduces absorbency. Never.
- Overloading the washing machine: Towels need room to move and rinse properly. Wash no more than 4-5 bath towels per load.
- Washing with clothes: Zippers, hooks, and rough fabrics can snag and damage towel loops.
- Ironing: Egyptian cotton towels don't need ironing. The heat flattens the loops and reduces softness.
The White Vinegar Trick
Every 3-4 washes, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle (not the wash cycle — don't mix with detergent). Vinegar:
- Strips detergent buildup from the fibres
- Restores absorbency
- Naturally softens without coating
- Eliminates any lingering odours
This is the single best thing you can do for your towels' longevity.
How Often to Wash
- Bath towels: Every 3-4 uses
- Hand towels: Every 1-2 days (they get more contact)
- Washcloths: After every use
- Bath mats: Weekly
Between washes, always hang towels spread out on a bar or hook so they dry completely. A damp towel folded in a pile is a bacteria breeding ground.
How Long Should Egyptian Cotton Towels Last?
With proper care, quality Egyptian cotton towels last 10+ years. Our Signature 600 GSM and Reserve 800 GSM towels are built for daily use over a decade — they actually get softer with age, not rougher.
The most common reason people replace towels prematurely is care mistakes (fabric softener, too-hot water, bleach) rather than genuine wear. Follow these guidelines and your towels will outlast everything else in your bathroom.
