What Does GSM Mean? The Complete Towel Weight Guide
GSM explained — learn what grams per square metre means for towels, how 600 GSM compares to 800 GSM, and how to choose the right towel weight for your needs.

What Is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much a one-metre-square piece of fabric weighs — and for towels, it's the single most important quality indicator.
A higher GSM means more cotton per square metre, which translates directly to:
- More absorbency — denser fabric holds more water
- More softness — more yarn creates a plusher surface
- More durability — tighter weave resists wear and pilling
Think of it like thread count for sheets, but more reliable — GSM can't be inflated with marketing tricks the way thread count often is.
GSM Ranges Explained
300-400 GSM: Lightweight
Thin, fast-drying towels. Common in gyms, beaches, and budget hotel rooms. They dry quickly between uses but feel noticeably thin. Acceptable for travel or workout bags, but not ideal for home bathrooms.
400-600 GSM: Mid-Weight
The range you'll find in most decent retail towels. Comfortable for daily use with reasonable absorbency. The upper end of this range (500-600 GSM) starts to feel genuinely plush.
600 GSM: Premium
This is our Signature Collection weight. At 600 GSM, you get:
- Excellent absorbency — dries your body thoroughly in one pass
- Plush, soft feel without excessive weight
- Quick drying on the towel bar between uses
- The best balance of luxury and practicality
600 GSM is what most luxury hotels use for their standard bathroom towels. It's dense enough to feel premium without being so heavy that it takes forever to dry.
800 GSM: Ultra-Luxury
This is our Reserve Collection weight — the densest towel we make. At 800 GSM:
- Maximum absorbency — absorbs significantly more water than 600 GSM
- Incredibly plush, almost blanket-like weight
- Slower to dry on the rack (by design — you want to savour this)
- The "five-star spa" feeling that most people associate with luxury towels
800 GSM towels are heavier and take longer to dry between uses, which makes them ideal for weekends, guest bathrooms, or anyone who prioritises the feeling of pure indulgence.
900+ GSM: Speciality
Some brands push past 900 GSM, but returns diminish rapidly. Above 800, towels become impractically heavy, slow to dry, and hard to launder. 800 GSM is the practical ceiling for quality towels.
600 GSM vs 800 GSM: Which Should You Choose?
Choose 600 GSM (Signature) if you want:
- The best everyday towel
- Quick drying between uses
- A towel that works for daily showers
- Easier laundering (lighter weight in the machine)
Choose 800 GSM (Reserve) if you want:
- The absolute softest, most absorbent towel
- A spa-like experience after every bath
- Guest bathroom luxury
- A towel that feels like a warm hug
Many of our customers keep both — Signature for daily use and Reserve for weekends and guests. Both are 100% Egyptian cotton and both get softer with every wash.
Why GSM Matters More Than Brand Claims
Marketing terms like "ultra-soft," "premium," or "luxury" have no standard definition. A towel labelled "luxury" could be 350 GSM. GSM gives you an objective, measurable comparison point.
When shopping for towels, always look for the GSM — it tells you more about quality than any brand name or price tag.
