Bath Towel Sizes Explained: Bath Sheet vs Bath Towel, Hand Towel, Washcloth and Bath Mat Dimensions

Sizes are the least glamorous part of selling towels and the thing people ask me about most. Before almost every order there is some version of the same question: is a bath sheet too big for me, will it fit my towel bar, how many do I actually need. This page answers those with the finished dimensions and dry weights from our mill's spec sheet, and with the honest downsides of the big pieces.

Everything below applies to both of our lines. Signature (600 GSM) and Reserve (700 GSM) are woven at the same mill in Sadat City, an industrial town about an hour northwest of Cairo, to the same sizes. The weights differ; the dimensions do not.

The short version

  • ✓Our bath towel is 70 x 140 cm (27.5 x 55 in). Our bath sheet is 90 x 160 cm (35.4 x 63 in), which works out to about 47% more fabric.
  • ✓A bath sheet wraps fully around most adults. The price is weight: 864 g at 600 GSM and 1,008 g at 700 GSM, so it dries slower, needs a wider bar, and makes a heavy wash load.
  • ✓Hand towels are 35 x 75 cm (13.8 x 29.5 in), washcloths 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 in), and the bath mat is 50 x 75 cm (19.7 x 29.5 in) at 900 GSM.
  • ✓Plan on two bath towels or sheets per person in rotation plus a spare for guests, and one hand towel per sink changed every couple of days.
  • ✓Label sizes on towels you already own are usually the cut size before washing. Lay them flat and measure hem to hem before you compare.

Every piece we make, in one chart

The chart comes first because it is what most people came for. The metric sizes are the mill's finished dimensions, the ones on the spec sheet we sign off before a run; the inches are converted from them. The weights are per piece, dry, straight out of the bale, and they are plain arithmetic: GSM is grams per square meter, so a 0.98 m2 bath towel at 600 GSM works out to 588 g.

Our sizes are the mill's finished dimensions after weaving and hemming. Cotton terry can shrink a little in the first hot washes, so measure a washed towel rather than a new one if you are comparing. The Reserve hand towel is listed at the same weight as the Signature one on the mill's sheet. The "typical sizes elsewhere" column is a generic range across US and European retail, not any brand's specification. Imperial weights are rounded.

Two things stand out when you set our sizes against the generic ones. Our bath towel is a touch longer than the smaller US standard (140 cm against 132 cm) and the same width, which is enough to notice when you dry your back and not enough to change how it hangs. Our bath sheet is the same width as the common US sheet but 18 cm shorter, and 10 cm longer than the common European sheet. That was not a grand design decision on our part; it is the sheet size our mill weaves, and after living with it I think it is a good compromise: long enough to wrap, short enough to fold and launder without swearing.

When the first sample pieces arrived I weighed them on a kitchen scale to check that the spec sheet was not a marketing round-up. They matched closely enough that I stopped checking. Weight is area times GSM, and there is nowhere for a mill to hide.

Bath sheet vs bath towel: who actually needs the big one

A bath sheet is not a different product. It is the same terry, the same weave, the same GSM, cut and hemmed bigger. Whether the extra fabric earns its keep depends on your body, your towel bar, and your patience with laundry.

A bath sheet and a bath towel hanging side by side on a double towel bar, the sheet clearly wider and longer
Same weave, same GSM, different cut. The bath sheet on the left is 90 x 160 cm; the bath towel on the right is 70 x 140 cm. Folded in thirds over a bar, the sheet takes 30 cm of rail and the towel about 23 cm.

The case for the bath sheet

At 90 x 160 cm (35.4 x 63 in) a bath sheet wraps fully around most adults with overlap to spare, and the 90 cm width covers from chest to knee. You can tuck it and walk from the shower to the bedroom without holding it closed. A 70 cm wide bath towel does not do that on a tall person; it stops well short of the knee, and around a broad frame the ends barely meet. If you have ever reached for a second towel to finish drying your legs, you are a bath sheet person, and the 1.44 m2 of terry (about 47% more than the bath towel) is exactly what solves it.

The case against it

Everything that makes a bath sheet good is also what makes it a nuisance. The 600 GSM sheet weighs 864 g dry and the 700 GSM sheet 1,008 g, against 588 g and 686 g for the bath towels. More cotton holds more water, and more water takes longer to leave. Dry time depends far more on your bathroom's humidity and airflow than on the towel, but the sheet is always the slower of the two, and a 700 GSM sheet in a windowless bathroom with a weak fan is, frankly, overkill.

  • Bar width. Folded in thirds, a 90 cm sheet is 30 cm (11.8 in) wide; a 70 cm bath towel is about 23 cm (9.2 in). Two sheets side by side want 60 cm of rail plus a gap for air.
  • Laundry. Four wet bath sheets is a heavy dryer load. Four 700 GSM sheets are about 4 kg (8.9 lb) dry, and cotton terry can hold more than its own weight in water, so roughly double that goes into the dryer.
  • Storage. A folded sheet stack is deeper and taller than a towel stack, which matters in a small linen cupboard. More on that below.

How we ended up with 400 bath sheets

One of our production runs this summer was meant to be bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. The mill wove 400 bath sheets as well, before we had a product listing for them or a photograph of one. They came off the line in bales and we had to decide how to sell a piece we had not planned for. We listed them as a set of two and they have been in the range ever since. I am glad of the accident. I would not have known how many customers wanted the big one if the mill had not made the decision for me.

My recommendation, by use case: if you are tall, broad, or want to wrap up and walk, buy the sheet. If your bathroom is small, damp, or shared by people who leave towels on the floor, buy the bath towel and enjoy the faster drying. Plenty of households do both: a sheet for the person who wants it and towels for everyone else. The two pieces are the same terry, so they do not look mismatched on the bar.

Hand towels and washcloths

The small pieces get less thought and more use. A hand towel by a sink is touched by every person who washes their hands, and it is the piece that gets replaced most often: not because it wears faster per use, but because it goes through so many more uses and washes than a bath towel does. If you are going to skimp anywhere, do not skimp here.

A hand towel hanging on a ring beside a bathroom sink
Our hand towel is 35 x 75 cm (13.8 x 29.5 in): narrower than the typical US hand towel and about as long, so it hangs on a ring without bunching and dries between uses.

Hand towels: 35 x 75 cm

Hand towels sold in the US typically run from 16 x 28 in to 20 x 30 in (41 x 71 cm to 51 x 76 cm). Ours is 35 x 75 cm (13.8 x 29.5 in), so it is as long as the larger end of that range and narrower than all of it. It is the cut our mill makes, and it happens to suit a ring. A wide hand towel on a ring folds over on itself and stays damp in the middle; a narrow one hangs flat and dries. The trade is that ours looks slim beside a wide American hand towel if you are mixing sets. At 196 g (6.9 oz) dry it is also light enough to change every couple of days without feeling like laundry.

Washcloths: 30 x 30 cm

A washcloth is 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 in), about the same as the 12 x 12 in washcloths common in the US and a little smaller than the 13 x 13 in ones. At 54 g in Signature and 63 g in Reserve, it is the one piece where the 700 GSM weight is pure upside: a heavier cloth holds more water against your face and there is nothing to dry or store.

Washcloths divide people more than any other piece. Some use a fresh one every morning as a face cloth and wash them in bulk; others have never picked one up and find a damp square by the sink faintly unpleasant. Both are fine. We sell them in sets of eight in Signature and four or eight in Reserve because the daily-use crowd goes through them. If you are in the never camp, skip them; nothing about the bath routine requires one.

Bath mats: a towel built for the floor

A cotton bath mat is a towel woven denser and cut to the shape of the floor in front of a tub or shower. Ours is 50 x 75 cm (19.7 x 29.5 in) at 900 GSM, which works out to 337 g (11.9 oz). The extra density does two jobs a bath towel would fail at: it stands up to being stepped on with wet feet many times a day, and it lies flat instead of rucking up at the edges. We make it in one line only, since a mat does not need a plushness choice.

A cotton bath mat lying on the floor in front of a bathtub
The bath mat is 50 x 75 cm (19.7 x 29.5 in) at 900 GSM, dense enough to lie flat and take foot traffic, and machine washable like a towel.

What a cotton bath mat is not: a rubber-backed bath rug. A rug has a backing that grips the tiles and a pile that is not meant to absorb much; a cotton mat has no backing, absorbs like a towel, and goes in the washing machine with the towels. On very smooth tile a cotton mat can slide, so if you need grip, put a thin non-slip underlay beneath it or keep the rug. If what you want is something that drinks the water off your feet and washes clean every week, the mat is the right piece.

Where it goes: directly in front of the tub or shower door, long side parallel to the tub, so you step from the water onto cotton. A wide walk-in shower is better served by two mats than by one bigger one, because two mats wash and dry more easily and can be replaced one at a time.

How many of each you need, with a worked shopping list

The rule I use, per person: two bath towels or bath sheets in rotation, so one is in use while the other dries or sits in the wash, plus a spare or two for guests. One hand towel per sink, changed every couple of days, which means three or four per sink if you do laundry weekly. Washcloths by habit: zero if you never use them, seven a week if you use a fresh one every day. More than that is storage, not hygiene.

One bathroom, two people

Here is how that rule shops out for a couple sharing one bathroom, using our set sizes. The first choice is whether one or both of you wants a bath sheet, because that decides the whole list.

  • Bath towel household. A Signature bath towel set of 4 ($162.95) gives each of you two in rotation. Add the Essential Bundle ($149.95: two bath towels, two hand towels, two washcloths) and you have two guest towels, a hand towel for each side of the sink, and a pair of washcloths. Total $312.90.
  • Bath sheet household. A bath sheet set of 2 (Signature $187.95 or Reserve $199.00) is one sheet each, not two. Pair it with the Essential Bundle and each of you has a sheet plus a bath towel in rotation, with hand towels and washcloths covered. Total $337.90 in Signature, or $348.95 with Reserve sheets. Buy a second sheet set later if you find the towel never gets used.
  • Hand towel top-up. Two hand towels is the minimum for one sink. A Signature hand towel set of 4 ($99.95) brings you to the change-every-couple-of-days rhythm without mid-week laundry.

On the sheet-versus-towel choice within a household, the honest advice is not to buy sheets for someone who has not asked for them. The person who wants the big towel knows it. Everyone else is better served by a bath towel that is dry by the next morning.

A note on Reserve, since people ask which line to put in the list. Reserve is 700 GSM and is certified by the Cotton Egypt Association. Until August 2026 it was 800 GSM; we moved it to 700 because the 800 pieces were slow to dry in most home bathrooms, and the 700 keeps most of the plushness at about 12% less weight per piece. It is the better towel to touch. It is not the better towel for a damp bathroom.

Will it fit: bars, hooks, shelves and the washing machine

Most of the disappointment I hear about bath sheets is not about the sheet. It is about a short towel bar, a single hook behind the door, or a linen cupboard built for someone else's towels. Measure before you buy. Here are the numbers to measure against.

Towel bars

Folded in thirds lengthwise, our bath sheet is 30 cm (11.8 in) wide on the bar and our bath towel about 23 cm (9.2 in). Folded in half instead, the sheet is 45 cm (17.7 in) and the towel 35 cm (13.8 in), and both dry faster that way because more terry faces the air. Two sheets in thirds need 60 cm of rail plus a hand's width of gap between them; two sheets in half need 90 cm. If your bar is short, hang in thirds and accept the slower dry.

Hooks

A hook is fine for a bath towel and a poor home for a bath sheet. On a hook a sheet hangs bunched, most of its 1.44 m2 pressed against itself, and the folds stay damp long after the outside is dry. If a hook is what you have, buy the bath towel.

Shelves and cupboards

Folded bath sheets, bath towels, hand towels and washcloths stacked on an open linen shelf
Folded in thirds and then in quarters, a bath sheet makes a 30 x 40 cm footprint and a bath towel about 23 x 35 cm. A hand towel folded in half and thirds is about 18 x 25 cm, and a washcloth in quarters is 15 x 15 cm.

Fold a bath sheet in thirds along its width and then in quarters along its length and the footprint works out to 30 x 40 cm (11.8 x 15.7 in); the same fold on a bath towel gives about 23 x 35 cm (9.2 x 13.8 in). So a shelf needs to be at least 40 cm deep to take sheets long side in, or 30 cm if you turn them. Sheets also stack taller: the 700 GSM sheet has 1,008 g of terry to fold against 686 g for the towel, and that shows in a pile of four.

The washing machine and dryer

Weigh your load by the mill weights. Four 700 GSM bath sheets are 4,032 g dry, call it 4 kg (8.9 lb); four 600 GSM sheets are 3,456 g, about 3.5 kg (7.6 lb); four 700 GSM bath towels are 2,744 g, about 2.7 kg (6 lb). Cotton terry can hold more than its own weight in water, so four wet sheets coming out of the washer weigh roughly double the dry figure, on the order of 8 kg (17.6 lb), and that is what your dryer has to tumble and heat. A small machine will manage it but take longer. If your dryer is compact, wash sheets two at a time with the small pieces, or line dry them. Care is the same at every size: warm wash at 40C (104F), half the detergent, no fabric softener, tumble low or line dry, and white vinegar in the rinse every few washes.

Measuring the towels you already own

The fastest way to know whether a bath sheet will suit you is to measure the towel you like best. Lay it flat on a bed, smooth it, and measure hem to hem in both directions, not corner to corner and not along a folded edge. Write the numbers down in centimeters; they will not match the label. The size on a towel label is usually the cut size before the first wash, and a cotton towel loses a little in its first hot washes, so a towel labeled 30 x 54 in will typically measure smaller after a year of use.

Then compare. If your favorite measures close to 70 x 140 cm, our bath towel will feel familiar. If it is wider than 80 cm, or you find yourself wishing it were, the sheet is the one. If you have a kitchen scale, weigh the dry towel and divide by its area: our bath towel at 588 g over 0.98 m2 comes out at 600 GSM, and the same sum on your own towel tells you what weight you are used to.

Questions I get asked

What size is a standard bath towel?+

In the US a standard bath towel is usually 27 x 52 in or 30 x 54 in (about 69 x 132 cm or 76 x 137 cm), and towels sold as oversized are often 30 x 58 in (76 x 147 cm). Our bath towel is 70 x 140 cm (27.5 x 55 in), so it is a little longer than the smaller US standard and about the same width. Those are finished sizes from the mill; a cotton towel can shrink a little in its first hot washes.

What size is a bath sheet?+

A bath sheet is a larger bath towel. In the US they are commonly 35 x 70 in (about 89 x 178 cm); in Europe 90 x 150 cm or 100 x 150 cm is typical. Our bath sheet is 90 x 160 cm (35.4 x 63 in), which sits between the two: the same width as the US size, a little shorter, and 10 cm longer than the common European size. It has 1.44 m2 of fabric against 0.98 m2 for our bath towel.

Is a bath sheet worth it?+

If you are tall, broad, or like to wrap a towel around yourself and have it stay closed, yes. A 90 x 160 cm sheet goes fully around most adults and covers chest to knee. The costs are real, though: at 600 GSM a bath sheet weighs 864 g dry against 588 g for a bath towel, so it takes longer to dry, needs a wider bar, and makes a heavier wash load. If your bathroom is small or poorly ventilated, a bath towel is the more practical choice.

What is the difference between a bath towel and a bath sheet?+

Only the size. In our range both are the same 100% Egyptian cotton, the same zero-twist weave, and the same GSM within a line. The bath towel is 70 x 140 cm (27.5 x 55 in) and the bath sheet is 90 x 160 cm (35.4 x 63 in), which works out to about 47% more fabric and 47% more weight. The sheet wraps; the towel is easier to dry, store and launder.

What size are hotel towels?+

Hotel bath towels are usually around 27 x 54 in (69 x 137 cm), hand towels 16 x 30 in (41 x 76 cm) and washcloths 13 x 13 in (33 x 33 cm). Hotels generally lean toward bath towels rather than bath sheets because they wash and dry faster in a commercial laundry and are easier to handle in volume. These are typical industry sizes, not any particular hotel chain's specification.

What size is a hand towel?+

Hand towels sold in the US typically run from 16 x 28 in to 20 x 30 in (about 41 x 71 cm to 51 x 76 cm). Ours is 35 x 75 cm (13.8 x 29.5 in): as long as the larger end of that range but narrower, which suits a ring or a short bar because it hangs without bunching. A fingertip towel, the small decorative one, is usually about 11 x 18 in (28 x 46 cm).

How many towels does a person need?+

My rule is two bath towels or bath sheets per person in rotation, one in use and one drying or in the wash, plus a spare or two for guests. Add one hand towel per sink, changed every couple of days, and washcloths according to habit, which for some people is one a day and for others is none. For two people sharing a bathroom that comes to four to six bath towels, two to four hand towels, and washcloths if you use them.
